BMW is arriving late to the party (Toyota, GM, Nissan and others are way ahead). It doesn’t expect its tiny new electric vehicle to hit U.S. showrooms until 2012, by which point Americans may have more than half a dozen models to choose from.

Still, if it can capitalize on that German reputation for engineering, BMW could become a real player.
